St. Luke's After School Academy offers individualized tutoring and after school homework assistance to children from second grade through middle school. Director Linda Smith, who brings more than thirty years of educational experience and retired as Principal of nearby R.O. Hardin Elementary School, specializes in helping children find that "aha!" moment so they can break through barriers that may be holding them back. After just one year of operation, the After School Academy is already making a huge difference in the lives of children and families. Students' “firsts” include a first “A” on a report card, first time reading an entire book, first time reading at grade level, first time playing a board game, and first time receiving an academic excellence award. Parents report less stress at home as children's grades improve and they no longer need to pressure their kids about schoolwork. Classroom teachers’ feedback to parents has been extremely positive: “Whatever you’re doing, keep it up!”
During the school year the After School Academy runs from 2:30 (1:30 on Thursdays) to 5:30 Mondays through Thursdays in the classroom to the left of the breezeway in our facility at 720 Monterey Street. Summer tutoring is offered hourly by appointment. Director Linda Smith sets up learning activities for each child and volunteer tutors offer continous support. All of our volunteers are screened and trained, and have appropriate academic backgrounds to help the children.
Current rates are $65 for two days a week, $75 for three days a week, and $88 for all four days. The individual tutoring rate is $35 for a fifty minute session. Several partial scholarships are still available for the 2012-2013 school year. Scholarships are funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation of San Benito County.
